THIRD CONDITIONAL

This type of conditional is used to think about situations in the past that did not happen and imagine what the results would have been.

If + PAST PERFECT, + WOULD + HAVE + VERB IN PAST PARTICIPLE

For example:

To express possible results to situations that did not occur in the past:

  • If you had come earlier, you would have had a better seat.

Si hubieras venido antes, habrías tenido un asiento mejor.

To express regret for not having performed an action in the past:

  • If I had taken an umbrella, I wouldn't have got wet.
Si hubiera cogido un paraguas, no me habría mojado.
